[To say that Shuda had come here with a plan was giving him a bit too much credit. Oh, he'd come here for a reason, all right, but that reason involved words, and words were one thing that Shuda, former member of the Oracion Seis, feared general of Demon Card turned Rave Warrior and now the slayer of a Demon Lord, had never been particularly good with, especially when those words involved talking about emotions.

Even though he's been living on the island for over a year now, he's somehow always found one reason or another to avoid coming to see Gale's grave. There was always something that needed doing around the house, something Gemma needed help with at the cafe, an errand to be run... and he'd thrown himself into those things in a desperate search for a sense of purpose here after he'd failed to do the one thing he'd devoted his entire being to-- protecting Haru. How could he possibly face Haru's father in light of that?

But Haru is back now, and Shuda has been finding himself feeling more and more out of place in the face of Haru's insistence on resuming his old life on the island. Someone needs to go into town and get groceries? Haru headed out twenty minutes ago with Elie in tow. Cafe Tsubomi's roof needs a few repairs? Haru's already on it. It's hard not to feel like he's nothing but a third wheel now, and while a part of him is glad for that - this where Haru belongs, not him - the other part feels painfully conflicted over the entire thing.

And now, standing here before the gravestone of Gale Glory, words are utterly failing him. Where does he even start?]

Haru's come home.

[Stating the obvious, perhaps, but it seems like a good place to begin.]

Cattleya took to Elie right away, just as I thought. They've settled back in like Haru never even left.

[... which is part of the reason Shuda is here in the first place. Haru is back, meaning that he can resume his job of looking after his older sister. But...]

It looks like they don't need me around anymore. Cattleya will be fine now that Haru's here.

[That's what he's telling himself, at least.]

I've kept my promise... so I suppose this is goodbye for now.

[He's done exactly what he said he would and protected Gale's family. There's no longer any reason for him to stay... and yet somehow his chest still aches at the thought.]

[Haru was glad to be back on Garage Island, living his old life, among old friends and old family, just returning to that sense of routine. Spending time with his sister, helping out the townspeople, even getting in some fishing on the side... It felt like the old days.

...But man, did it ever feel weird to be doing it. He wasn't sure whether it's because he got used to the life of adventuring and touring the world, or because of the actual freakin' year he lost while not existing, but trying to return to such a normal, mundane life on the island just felt... odd now. It was a feeling he couldn't put into words, because it didn't make any sense to him. He was back on the island, and everyone accepted him back into their lives like nothing was wrong. He was living with his sister again, and he had Elie here too, and even Shuda was around! As... weird as Shuda and Cattleya's relationship was to him, it still felt nice having him around.

So for the life of him, he couldn't understand why he felt so weird about living this "normal" life again. He was heading to his parents' graves, hoping to talk to them--okay, maybe more like talk at them, considering. Just talk out all these feelings and get his head straight. Or at least feel better about it.

But when he spots Shuda standing there first, he freezes in place, and falls silent. He's heard Shuda talk before about this "promise to Gale" he had that he was intent on keeping, something he's never questioned him on. In fact, he's never questioned Shuda much at all about his relationship with his Dad, huh? He asked Gale about it, in their brief time together, and he acted like Shuda was just some desert thug he beat the crap out of. But Shuda sure doesn't seem to see it that way. There's gotta be more to the story, right? A story he was about to question him right then and there about, if not for that last thing Shuda says.

"I've kept my promise... so I guess this is goodbye for now."

Something about that phrase just... set him off, for a multitude of reasons. Shuda just... wanted to up and leave, and all because he thinks he won't be needed anymore?]

You know, Shuda... [He breaks the silence at the gravesite abruptly.]

You used to talk a lot of crap. But this right here's the biggest load of bull I've ever heard come out of your mouth.

[One of the the side effects of now having only one good eye, Shuda has learned, is that his hearing has become even keener to make up for what his vision lacks, and he hears those footsteps approaching as that last sentence leaves his own mouth. He knows who it is right away by the gait (and he's not sure whether this is the better or worse option); by the time Haru speaks, he's already tensed up in preparation of what he knows is coming, because he knows there is no way in hell that this is going to go over well.

Rather than turn around to face Haru just yet, he keeps his gaze locked on the gravestone as he responds.]

I made a vow on my honor as a warrior to protect the two of you, and I've done what I said I would. The threat of this world's destruction has finally disappeared thanks to you.

[He pauses for a moment to inhale, casting his eyes up to the brilliant blue of the sky. Ironic, really... Gale always did love the sky...]

I appreciate your hospitality [such a detached way of putting it], but there's no place on this island for a warrior in a time of peace.

[Surely even Haru will understand that much. He can't stay here-- he simply doesn't belong. An ordinary, peaceful life is anathema to a man who has lived by the sword and always expected to die by the sword, and the way Haru is able to slip back into routine so easily (or so he thinks) is only further evidence that despite what he may want to believe, this isn't something that was ever meant for him.]
ravelt: (Well... I guess that's true...)

[personal profile] ravelt 2020-01-17 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Shuda doesn't really have to worry about facing Haru. With his presence here exposed, he's got no reason to maintain his distance or keep quiet. So instead he comes closer, approaching the twin graves.]

Well... You're not wrong about Garage Island. [He kneels down in front of his mother's, Sakura, grave.] Compared to the rest of the world, it's pretty uneventful here. [He briefly looks up at Shuda and shoots him a grin.] Most of the time.

[You know exactly what he's saying there, Shuda. You know what you did.

He looks back down at the grave, placing a hand on it.]

But is that a bad thing? Sure, it's kinda boring here most days, but... It's home. Besides, Dad was a warrior too, and he found his place here. Why's that so hard for you?
dancing_flames: (Don't even think about it)

[personal profile] dancing_flames 2020-01-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[He knows quite well, as is evidenced by the way his mouth thins into a line. He certainly isn't proud of what he did to Garage Island, and even though Gemma has long since forgiven him for it (and put him to work in the cafe time and time again as a means of repayment), there's still a sense of guilt that settles low in the pit of his stomach every time he goes into town.

Wanting more excitement is one thing. Being the source of said excitement? Not so great anymore now that he's sprouted a full-fledged conscience, and doubly so now that he actually lives here.]

... Gale found a reason to find a place here.

[Namely, his family. And Shuda... he can't say he doesn't want the same thing, because he does, and that realization unnerves him more than he'd been expecting. Rather, with Haru's return, he can't help but wonder just how much of Cattleya's attachment to him is to him rather than to a desire to fill the void that had been created by the loss of her entire family.]
ravelt: (I'm sure of it! Trust me!)

[personal profile] ravelt 2020-01-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Haru's eyes narrow at Shuda at what he just said. Or perhaps what he hasn't said. He reading between the lines here and he doesn't like the subtext he's picking up here. Even if it's actually entirely incorrect.]

Shuda, are you saying Sis ain't a good enough reason for you?

[Tread carefully, Shuda, you're now navigating the minefield of Haru's Overprotective Brother Mode.]
dancing_flames: (Not impressed)

[personal profile] dancing_flames 2020-01-21 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Now Shuda does tear his gaze away from the sky to look down at Haru, something sharp and angry flashing in his single eye, though he's careful to keep his expression neutral. It seems that Haru has managed to strike a nerve, whether he realizes it or not. Cattleya is both the reason he wants to stay and also part of the reason why he thinks he should leave.]

Did I say that?

[It's a challenge, almost, or at least as much of one as he can make without a weapon being involved. It would seem that even a year of peace and quiet still hasn't managed to change some aspects of his personality...]
ravelt: (The heck're we supposed to do?!)

[personal profile] ravelt 2020-02-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure sounds like it to me! You just... want to up and leave, and leave her here all alone!

[And boy does that make his blood boil. His sister's the greatest girl on the planet (besides Elie, of course) as far as he's concerned and she's had way too many guys try to use her and break her heart and he made a promise that he wasn't letting that happen to her ever again.]

And like hell I'm gonna just let you break her heart like that!
